Bodo press : MC Mary Kom on Saturday sealed her spot for next year's Olympic qualifiers with 9-1 verdict against flyweight (51kg) Nikhat Zareen, who had publicly demanded a trial for the race to Tokyo. Refusing to shake hands with Nikhat after the bout, she said, "Why should I ? if she wants others to respect her , she should first respect others..' Nikhat reacted saying, 'I expect seniors to respect us too. I felt hurt but that's oky !
In the months leading up to the Mary Kom-Nikhat Zareen trial, heated, resentful statements came from both sides. On Saturday, it reflected inside the ring . For most part of the Mary-Nikhat fight, held at the Capital's Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, it seemed the two boxers were involved in a wrestling encounter. At the end of nine minutes and three grueling rounds , 36 year old Mary prevailed 9-1 over 23 year old Nikhat through a split decision. She will represent India the 51 kg on the Olympic qualifiers in Wuhan, China next February.
